9/4/2023 0 Comments Best 9mm ammo brandsI like Federal HST 9mm 147 grain for home defence (more costly), but at the range I go with the cheapest full metal jacket. For home defence I would recommend heavier grain, hollow point, which will more likely turn into shrapnel and shred the viscera, without over-penetration (what's beyond your target/doesn't punch through sheet rock as much). Roughly speaking lighter grain is better for target shooting, but a heavier grain has better expansion and penetration on impact (hits harder/more effective kill shot). Lighter weight = faster round and therefore a straighter trajectory for all intents and purposes. This refers to the weight of the bullet (I mean the brass that exits the business end of a barrel here). For 9mm most common you'll see are 115 grain, 124 grain, 147 grain etc. They tend to shoot well with most handguns.įor training rounds I use Winchester White Box but others have recommended CCI/Blazer to me.įorgive me if you know any of this, otherwise I hope it helps. I recommended sticking with well-known and reliable brands for JHP: Go to the range and fire like 200 FMJs to practice your skill and get familiar with your weapon, then fire around 50 - 100 JHPs to confirm they feed through your barrel with no issues. There are two main types of ammo you will be interested in, training ammo (FMJ) and self-defense ammo (JHP) with the former being the least expensive (hence why it is recommended for training). Others already explained to you waht grain (weight) means and about other terms such as FMJ (full metal jacket) or JHP (jacketed hollow points). Those who would identify as Democrats, Progressives, Socialists, &c. "Liberal" here is "left-of-center", in US political terms. This is a place for liberal gun-owners who want to discuss gun ownership absent the "noise" of most right-leaning pro-gun forums. Gun ownership through a pro-gun liberal lens.
